VocabularyBoundary, Gathering signal

"In orienteering, it's important to stay aware and return on time"

Students move freely within a defined boundary while maintaining awareness of a teacher-led signal. When the signal is given, students must stop and return to the teacher as quickly and safely as possible. Builds divided attention, group responsibility, and awareness in terrain.

Setup

  1. Define a clear boundary (or complete the Boundary Run first)
  2. Establish a central gathering location
  3. Make sure the space is free from hazards

Steps

  1. Lead the group to the central location and have them gather around you
  2. Review the boundary
  3. Explain the activity: they will move freely within the boundary while waiting for a signal
  4. Demonstrate the gathering signal clearly. When students hear it, they must return to their starting location as quickly and safely as possible
  5. Send the group into the space. They can go individually, in pairs, or small groups. Encourage them to go up to but not past the boundary.
  6. After 2-3 minutes, signal for the group to gather. Count how long it takes the whole group to assemble
  7. Repeat, encouraging the group to come up with strategies to improve their gathering time

Differentiation

Ways to adapt the activity to meet the needs of your students: slow things down, increase the challenge, or adapt for different learners

  • Different signals: Use a visual or other signal to increase challenge
  • Movement constraints: skip, gallop, or use animal movements while exploring
  • With a game: play tag between gathering signals

Tips

  • Use both audible and visual signals so all students can participate
  • Allow students to self-pace their movement intensity
  • Adjust the size of the space based on the group's comfort and ability
  • Connect the activity to everyday experiences (like responding to a school bell)
