Learning Goals
Students completing this activity will be able to:
- Listen or watch for a signal while moving
- Be aware of others in shared space
- Respond quickly and safely to the gathering signal
- Communicate and coordinate with the group to improve gathering time
- Move freely within a defined space with confidence
- Understand and respect boundaries
See the Grade 3-5 curriculum for how this activity fits into the lesson sequence.
How to Run It
Setup
- Define a clear boundary (or complete the Boundary Run first)
- Establish a central gathering location
- Make sure the space is free from hazards
Steps
- Lead the group to the central location and have them gather around you
- Review the boundary
- Explain the activity: they will move freely within the boundary while waiting for a signal
- Demonstrate the gathering signal clearly. When students hear it, they must return to their starting location as quickly and safely as possible
- Send the group into the space. They can go individually, in pairs, or small groups. Encourage them to go up to but not past the boundary.
- After 2-3 minutes, signal for the group to gather. Count how long it takes the whole group to assemble
- Repeat, encouraging the group to come up with strategies to improve their gathering time
Differentiation
Ways to adapt the activity to meet the needs of your students: slow things down, increase the challenge, or adapt for different learners
- Different signals: Use a visual or other signal to increase challenge
- Movement constraints: skip, gallop, or use animal movements while exploring
- With a game: play tag between gathering signals
Tips
- Use both audible and visual signals so all students can participate
- Allow students to self-pace their movement intensity
- Adjust the size of the space based on the group's comfort and ability
- Connect the activity to everyday experiences (like responding to a school bell)
Script
Introducing the Signal
"When you hear this signal (pheep pheep), you must return here as quickly and safely as you can."
"You can explore anywhere inside the boundary, but you must always be ready to return."
Starting the Activity
"Go! Move around the space. You can walk, jog, or skip. Stay inside the boundary, and listen for the signal."
(After 2-3 minutes, blow the whistle)
After Gathering
"That took us 15 seconds. Let's see if we can do it faster next time."
"What strategies could help the whole group gather more quickly?"
(Send them out again and repeat)
Vocabulary
Boundary: The perimeter of the play area. All checkpoints are inside the boundary.
Gathering signal: A signal from the leader (such as a whistle blast or raised hand) telling everyone to stop and gather at a designated spot.
